About the burn rate & runway

Burn rate is how fast a startup spends cash; runway is how long that cash lasts. Net burn = monthly expenses − monthly revenue, and runway = cash ÷ net burn. This calculator returns net burn, runway in months and the approximate date you run out — the single number that ends most startups.

Frequently asked questions

Is this tool free?

Yes — completely free, no signup, no watermark and no limits. Startup OG funds the site through its directory and partner program, not paywalled tools.

How do you calculate runway?

Runway (months) = cash in the bank ÷ net monthly burn, where net burn = monthly expenses − monthly revenue. If you are profitable, runway is effectively infinite.

What is the difference between gross and net burn?

Gross burn is total monthly cash out. Net burn subtracts revenue. Net burn drives runway; this tool uses net burn.

How much runway should a startup keep?

A common rule is 18+ months after a raise, and to start fundraising with 6–9 months left, since rounds take time.
